I feel so similarly about how living in Madison, WI shaped me. It was such a formative experience for me. I love that God knows exactly what we will need to become the people He wanted us to be all along.
I think Portland stole the “keep Portland weird” slogan from Austin (where I live). 😉 I grew up in ATX and moved back once I met my now husband, and sometimes I forget how much it has shaped me into the crunchy, home-birthing woman that I am. I’m grateful, even though there are many things I would change about the city of course.
Loved this piece; sorry it took me so long to comment! Just visiting Minneapolis this past week was refreshing in that it reminded me in so many ways of who I was (and still am!) before being consumed by my education that has been motherhood (and moving to South Dakota). Re-reading this post and coming off that trip really has me thinking of the places I've lived (Spain, LA, Twin Cities) and how they shaped me... I may write a post along these lines, inspired by you! I do think this is so real. Place is so real. I've always felt really emotional about leaving even the specific places (houses/apartments) I've lived in!
I just love this reflection! The way you explored Portland and Minneapolis is inspiring!
What I also find interesting is that I found organic food when I was living in south Minneapolis circa 2006 to 2009 and learned the rest living in Stillwater.
Perhaps that’s what I find so interesting - the way a stranger’s story can intertwine with another in a different time and space.
Minneapolis is sort of ground zero IMO for excellent organic farm to table food. I was living in Minneapolis the same time as you, Dinkytown from 2006-2009, then Linden Hills right after that. Funny to think we could have crossed paths!

Rachel, I’ve so loved hearing about your time in Madison. I know it was a place that profoundly shaped and impacted you.

They did steal it! You’re right! Ah I have heard such fun things about Austin.
Austin is an amazing place. I'll be visiting you someday, Christina! :)
I would love that!!

Amber you lived in Spain?! So did Seth. We need to talk about that.
What?! Awesome. I was in Granada. (Add it to the ever-growing list of things we need to talk about lollol)

Ah, Emily. I loved your comment here, thank you.
